Implementation of the Mac Books in 8th Grade Physical Science during the 2009-2010 school year occurred in the following ways:

  • A multi-media based Alternative Energy project
    • Students could work individually in iWeb, or in small groups using iMovie or Garage Band to create an advertisement for an alternative energy source of their choosing.
    • All advertisements included certain aspects of the alternative energy source such as pros and cons, an explanation of the energy type and how it is converted into usable energy, etc....
  • Used the Don Johnston software (Read-Out-Loud and Write-Out-Loud) during Homebase for students to remediate formal assessments.

During the four days of Mac Book training the following ideas have been worked on for implementation for the 2010-2011 school year:

  • Expand upon the use of the Don Johnston software.  For example, files have been exported into a PDF format so that students can use the Red-Out-Loud program to support them when reading an assignment to answer the questions that are posted.
  • Creating a set of interactive, computer based tutorials for the following topics.
    • Using a ruler, Finding Volume of a Regular Shaped Object, Finding Volume of an Irregular Shaped Object, Using a Mass Balance, Create Data Tables and Graphs.
    • Each tutorial was created using the iMovie program in conjunction with iPhoto, OpenOffice Garge Band and Smart Notebook.
  • Using the Smart Notebook software in conjunction with the Bamboo tablet and pen to create the opportunity for a much more interactive approach to presenting content in a whole class instruction setting.
  • Directions for the Grapher Program was created so students can set up appropriate x-axis, y-axis, and to insert data points to create Linear Line graphs.
